Why Write A Book? Important Questions To Ask Yourself

January 30, 2020 by Peter Wietmarschen Leave a Comment

Writing a book is a big decision to make and you need to be prepared to undertake the project at hand. When you are working on your book there are many things to keep in mind but one of the most important things to remember is: WHY! That’s right, you will need to ask yourself why write a book?

Your book is a business; treat it like one. All successful businesses are clear on their why. It leads to their mission and vision statements. These then lead to appropriate courses, products, and programs which all lead to consistent and loyal clients! Your why is more important than you might think!

Why Write A Book?

Great question! Why write a book? The answer to this simple question is going to be unique for every writer out there. Every author has something different which motivates them to write. Why is the basic question to understand; the why is your internal or exterior motives to writing your book.

Yes, your why can be as simple as saying, I want to make money or I want to have more clients but in reality your why is likely deeper than that. For example, are you a  business coach who wants to share their story with a wider audience? If so, your end goal is to make money or have your book provide an avenue to increased income by reaching a wider audience but your motivation to write the book could be: To change the lives of more clients. Or, to work with more clients to provide a sustainable and profitable business.

Even still, those why’s are a little superficial. It’s critical for you to dig down and ask, “Why?” to reach your deep down motivating reason. Continuing with the above example, if you wan to provide a sustainable and profitable business to more clients, why do you do that? Maybe you have come from the corporate world and realized the benefits to owning your own business. You may have come away from a bad relationship and needed to create a business for yourself and you know how to work hard and produce. Maybe your why is to speak at conferences around the world.

Understanding your why is not going to come over night. You will need to work on this over time and preferably with a close friend or business coach. Your why is important to you, your book, and your business; work hard to find it!

Why Does It Matter

When you are clear on your why, you will see a few benefits.  You will:

  1. be more motivated to finish your project.
  2. connect with your ideal audience.
  3. be more authentic in your writing.

Taking a holistic approach to your life, your book, and your business, your why is important throughout everything. If you’re a loyal reader of the blog, this question is one you will have seen just a few days ago when I shared our  5 W’s blog. Your why will carry over from one area of your business to the others, from marketing to writing and more!
