How many times can we use the New Year as a way to introduce a blog? Who knows, at least one more today! As 2020 is here how many of you are looking to read more? Well I know I am and I want to share a few tips on how you can read more. As a writer, reading is one of the best ways you can better your trade and setting reading goals is a good way you can know you are reading enough.
Reading Goals for 2020
In our previous blogs in 2020 both Colleen and I spoke on how approaching life and business in a holistic manner is crucial for success. The same is true for writers; you must approach your book and your writing in a holistic manner. One way you can do that is by reading and setting reading goals for yourself. Besides the actual act of writing, reading is the best way you can better your own writing skills. You will better understand what readers will expect, you increase your vocabulary and gain an appreciation for the wide variety of style in writing.
Take a moment and think about how much you read. Are you a daily reader (you probably should be), do you read for 5 minutes or an hour? Do you read fiction? Memoirs? Investment books? Once you take a minute to think about your current reading habit you can better set your reading goals for 2020. In order to be successful in your goal you want to find a target within your reach. Are you able to read 10 books? Probably. 100 books? That might be a stretch. Remember, set your goals in accordance with your holistic approach to life and business. Setting a high goal might feel good at the moment but if it’s unattainable you will do nothing but make yourself feel discouraged. Unless you are willing to drastically change your lifestyle I suggest setting a reasonable goal.
Using Goodreads
If you are a reader, you might be familiar with Goodreads, a social media site for readers and authors. I enjoy Goodreads because they have a reading challenge for the year. The reading challenge is a place where you can track the progress of your reading goals though the year. There are some other fun features like being able to link you Amazon account and Kindle to your account. You can organize books into shelves like a to-read shelf, a business shelf, a series shelf, or whatever else you might want. Another great feature is the ability to follow authors, so if an author you follow releases a new book or a has a book giveaway you will be notified.
What is your reading goal for 2020? I am pledging to read 10 books this year, head over to Goodreads and we can be friends!
Reaching Your Reading Goals: Read What You Want
Here is something many people never hear; read what you want! I cannot count the number of times people have told me, “You must read this book!” or, “Business books are all you should read.” I want to squash that right here and now! You can read whatever you want and become a better writer. Now, I will say if you are looking to write a memoir I would suggest you read a few memoirs. If you want to make $100,000 this year you might want to read a business book or two. However, know you can read whatever you want. Sometimes I fall into a rut with all the reading I do, but it just takes one fun book for me to get out and read more. Find the books you love and read them!
Create Your #2020Success
Setting your reading goals for 2020 is only one aspect of #2020Success. It’s important to approach your life holistically and one way to do that is by creating a 2020 vision board.
