Monday… It’s Just Another Day
It’s true; no matter how much most of us dread them, Mondays really are just another day! If we work on changing our attitude about them, we’d learn to embrace Mondays and realize we’re lucky to be alive and make the most of Monday and every day. Whether it’s facing five days of doing work just for a paycheck, facing the number of meetings or projects due, or facing people you’d rather not be around because they drain the energy right out of you. These are three of the many attitudes facing people around Mondays and I’m going to share my tips on shifting your mindset and activities so your Mondays are positive and not a day to dread.
Find What You Love to Do; Life’s Too Short
We all know there are 52 Mondays in the year and yes, a couple of those fall on holidays, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Martin Luther King Day, depending on when the Christmas and New Year’s holidays fall, vacation… Okay, let’s say you have 46 Mondays you find yourself going to work or running your business and you wake up with a queasy stomach, you just don’t want to put your feet on the floor. You’d rather be doing anything else. What is your “anything else? What is your WHY? Going to work just for a paycheck is going to drain the life out of you. When you figure out your WHY, you’ll be happy to leave your bed on Monday and every day.
You may think you don’t have a choice; you have to work the job you don’t like, and you aren’t passionate about. Chances are you might have to stay in your current position for a little bit if the family situation depends on your income, but if you really want to make a change, change your mindset by figuring out your WHY and you’ll determine what it is you really love to do and what lights your fire. Ask yourself these questions to start:
- Why are you doing what you do?
- What excites you about your current job/career or business?
- After the paycheck, what does real success feel like for you?
- What is it you don’t enjoy about your current position and why?
When you discover your WHY nothing stops you from achieving your goals. Do you have the mindset to discover your WHY and make Mondays as awesome as every other day of the week?
Plan Ahead to Make Mondays as Easy as Possible
I’m an anxious person. I like to be in control. Put the feelings of not being in control, not planning, and anxiousness together and you end up with a disaster, for me anyway. How do I work around this? On Fridays, I always plan ahead as much as possible for the upcoming week – whether it’s client calls, a podcast show I’m going to be a guest on, a product launch… When I plan on Friday for the next week, it takes away 99% of any worry or negative mindset on Sunday afternoons and what I call the dreaded “Monday is a coming” even though it’s over 12 hours away. Why? Because I’m not thinking about what needs to be completed first thing Monday morning; what time is my first call, do I have a podcast interview…
I know on Fridays we want to leave the office, but hold yourself accountable and plan for the following week, at least for Monday, so you aren’t robbing yourself of your valuable time off with yourself, your family/friends, and you’re not present with them. Life’s too short.
Find Your Circle of Five
In the end, almost everything comes down to your support systems and they type of people you hand around. Negative people breed negativity. If you find yourself around these type of people you have a choice. Stay with them and continue to follow the negative gossip, poor me talk… Or, find your circle of five. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” Who is in your circle of five?
In “How to Get Out of Your Own Way” (Grand Central Publishing), Tyrese Gibson, the “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” star writes about his “circle of five” epiphany, courtesy of fellow actor and mentor Will Smith. “He said, ‘You can often tell how far your life and career will go based on the five people you spend the most time with.”
If you’re standing around the water cooler and you’re tired of the negative Nellies or Nathaniels or you’re going to networking meetings and the attendees are gossipers and complain about everything what do you do? The choice is yours. Find other people besides the water cooler gang, there are other networking groups to better fit your needs.
Avoid the water cooler when everyone is around; ask someone new to lunch or go take a walk by yourself – it’s a great time to clear your mind and exercise at the same time. It’s nice to have comrades at work, but it isn’t necessary. Networking groups? Over 23+ years of business I’ve been there and done that and I’m only about upleveling myself and my business with true professionals who are positive people; true entrepreneurs and not hobby owners.
Shifting Towards A Positive Mindset
So while Mondays can be hard, be grateful you’re alive, you can put your feet on the floor, and you’re able to go to work. Follow my tips on how you can create a positive mindset every Monday by:
- Discovering your WHY – when you know WHY you do anything you are driven and nothing can stop you but yourself. Find your WHY and soar.
- Planning your week (at least Monday) – when you plan the following week or at least Monday you’ve set yourself up for success and you don’t have to spend the weekend worrying about meetings with clients, missing a podcast interview, or writing social media for your product launch because you’ve planned it out last Friday before you closed up shop for the weekend. Now Sunday afternoon/evening is ruined by the dreadful “Monday is a coming.”
- Finding your circle of five – when you find your circle of five you grow in every aspect of your life. Your circle of five are people who help you:
- follow your dreams; they help you believe everything is possible.
- understand the big picture and can help you break any goal into actionable steps.
- understand your goals are met when they have a purpose.
- realize they are there no matter what – in good times and in bad times.
- see both sides of any issue and let you know it – may see harsh but they have your best interests at heart.
So Monday, like Friday and Sunday, is just another day and it’s all about your mindset and how you look at things and systems you put in place to make Mondays a positive experience for you. After all, we only have one chance at this life, why not make the most of it by taking action and having a positive mindset no matter the day of the week.
