Stumbling Blocks Lead to Growth: Business and Personal

"The currency of real networking is not greed but generosity." ~Keith Ferrazzi

Networking is essential for businesses. I started networking with the International Virtual Assistants Association (IVAA), my first year in business. I met and developed professional relationships with virtual assistants who provided services such as medical and corportate transcription, online business management, marketing, bookkeeping, copywriting; you name it. I met several service providers who helped authors publish books and I was intrigued. I didn't immediately pursue helping people publish books or gain access to speaking engagements.

Books and My Why

I've loved reading books since I was young and the writing was on the wall to either alleviate the stumbling blocks our business was facing or quit. Fast forward a few years and IVAA offered the Jan B. King IVAA Memorial Scholarship. I applied, won and earned my certifications for Professional Author and Speaker Assistant!

Jan was the President and CEO of Merritt Publishing and the co-founder of eWomenPublishingNetwork. With her 25+ years as a publishing strategist, Jan created the Author's Assistant Training and Certification Program. Jan recognized that executive and virtual assistants could offer valuable publishing services to authors and writers. Their skills for communicating effectively, managing deadlines, troubleshooting and solving problems, and proficiency in tech were perfect for adding additional revenue streams.

With my background in executive and legal administrative assistance, this was a great segue for me. I added more skills and services to support writers and authors.

Why The Author's Voice?

I developed a professional and personal relationship with a member of IVAA and graduate of the certification programs for authors and speakers. It evolved into a trusted friendship. In 2022, the current trustees of the courses approached Peter and me about purchasing the program. We formed an outline and approached Candy, aka CaZ, writing coach, author, CPAA, and after several conversations, The Author's Voice was born!

What is The Author's Voice?

Everyone has a story to tell and The Author's Voice is here to help writers, authors, and speakers bring their book(s) to life, to help them publish it, and share it. The Author's Voice empowers publishing professionals, authors, and writers with the tools, guidance and support needed to reach their goals.

Three Pillars: Education - Community - Professionalism

On the education side, The Author's Voice currently serves as the training center for the original author and speaker assistant training courses. We've also added new courses for both authors and professional assistants to stay up to date on the latest publishing trends.

The community aspect is highlighted through a new podcast idea from Peter: Blank Page to Best Seller. The Author’s Voice, Candy, Colleen, and Peter, talk with each other and guests about how writers can take their book from blank page to best seller. From published authors to industry professionals and everyone in between, the Blank Page to Best Seller podcast sheds light on the many facets of the publishing industry.

Finally, on the professionalism side, we created The Author's Voice Association (TAVA). It was created for two reasons:

  1. To connect authors with our trusted, qualified, and experienced publishing professionals because they know how and what needs to be completed to provide the best, most affordable support for authors, whether it's the author's first book or 20th. Our professionals are here to help!

  2. For association members to build relationships within TAVA, gain credibility, grow their businesses, and develop professionally.

Why Your Literary Prose and The Author's Voice Partnership?

Deep down, we'd all like to acquire the skills and the knowledge to do everything, know everything, and learn everything. Realistically, unless we're Superman or Wonder Woman, it's highly unlikely.

Your Literary Prose has the experience and knowledge to complete any publishing task so people can professionally publish their book, but we admit we don't have the skills or the desire to complete the hundreds (yes) of tasks for a published book. The three main pillars Your Literary Prose offer are Professional Editing and Proofreading, Certified Publishing Services, and Strategic Marketing. That's where The Author's Voice and The Author's Voice Association comes into play.

  • The Author's Voice Association members are vetted, trusted professional experts who provide the tasks and services we don't.

  • The Author's Voice helps writers and authors feel confident and prepared to publish their books and avoid the confusion, costly mistakes, being taken advantage of by unethical service providers, and more.

In closing, Peter and I know and trust partnering with The Author's Voice is a win-win for everyone. Your Literary Prose provides professional editing and proofreading, publishing services, and marketing services for authors and writers and we have trusted individuals we can recommend for the services we don't provide and aren't qualified to perform.

The TAV community is for authors, writers, and publishing professionals.

  • Whether you're an author looking to publish a book and learn to do it yourself or discover the questions to ask when you want to work with a professional, check out our education platform. TAV educates you.

  • If you're a publishing professional looking for a community, The Author's Voice is your place. Find a trusted professional and develop relationships with others who provide a service you don't, ask a question to a peer in publishing, or take courses and stay in the know with current industry trends.

"Collaboration is the essence of life. The wind, bees, and flowers work together, to spread the pollen." ~Amit Ray, Indian author and "spiritual master"

Colleen’s love of books began as a young girl; she’d walk to the library, gather as many books as she could carry in her arms, walk home, and immerse herself in the stories. As for her writing, editing, and proofreading, she always noticed misspelled words and grammatical mistakes in whatever she read, and further developed those skills while working as a legal secretary. After 18 years as a solopreneur, Colleen pivoted to become a Certified Professional Author and Speaker Assistant to help people seeking direction throughout the publishing process (both traditional and self-publishing).

But her background doesn’t end there! She has also acted as a professional editor and proofreader for not one, but THREE national magazines, contributing as both an article author and managing editor for two of them.

The Write Way: Conversations With Publishing Pros was her first leap to authoring a book, collaborating with other authors, and sharing her expertise so authors can choose the right publisher, build their author platforms, and make money from their books.
