What Are You Reading Today?

April 30, 2020 by Peter Wietmarschen Leave a Comment

If you’re like me, you’ve probably been doing a lot more reading recently. I know when the whole COVID-19 quarantine/stay-at-home order was announced I made the decision to really try to increase my reading and for the most part I’ve been adhering to my goal.

Reading Every Day

It doesn’t matter how old you are it’s important to read every day. I’m not talking about scrolling through your Facebook feed or reading the newspaper, I’m talking about reading books. While it really doesn’t matter what you read, in order to stay motivated, read books in alignment with your goals and values. For example, you might be working on growing your business so you spend more time reading books on strategic growth. Maybe you’re writing your memoir so you read other memoirs to gain a better understanding of the genre. Reading for fun is also a great way to reduce stress and unwind.

What Am I Reading?

I’m sure I’m not alone, but I am a bit different than most readers. I tend to read two, three, or event five books at a time. I get bored easily so I keep myself interested by jumping between the fiction and nonfiction. Depending on what I’m doing or how I’m feeling, I read a mixture of fun novels and books on business, but whatever I read always points back to my values. Right now, I am currently reading four books:

  • The Productivity Project – Chris Bailey
  • Under The Dome – Stephen King
  • The Man in the High Castle – Phillip K. Dick
  • Be Happy No Matter What – Ellen Seigel

Now for me, two of these are to unwind and relax, one is for a client’s project, and one is for our book club. This is not much different from the normal amount of book I read at one time but I have actually taken the time to read now!

Keeping Track of Your Books

I swear by Goodreads. Goodreads is a site which helps you keep track of what you have read, what you want to read, and follow your favorite authors. You can shelve books however you want. The community has lists of any and every genre. You can link your Kindle to your account. And so, so much more.

My favorite part of Goodreads is that they have a yearly reading challenge you can join. The idea behind the challenge is that you challenge yourself to read a certain number of books for the year and Goodreads helps you keep track of your progress. You can even even see your friends’ challenges and how they are doing. I love this because it gives me a visual reminder of what I have read and how much I need to read.
