Do you react to life’s circumstances with unconscious or conscious behavior? Are you living your life’s purpose? Recently, I was a guest on the podcast, “SuperPowers of the Soul” with host, Jennifer Urezzio. We chatted about my spiritual power of purpose and how it’s easier to be in tune with my life’s purpose when I am aware of my unconscious and conscious behaviors. Here are a few things I’ve learned about how we can understand our behaviors.
Effects of Unconscious and Conscious Behavior
Unconscious behavior is defined as a reservoir of feelings, thoughts, urges, and memories that are outside of our conscious awareness. The unconscious mind contains contents that are unacceptable or unpleasant, such as feelings of pain, anxiety, or conflict.
Conscious behavior comes from your own mind and what you choose to do in a given moment. An example of this is making breakfast. You make and eat breakfast because you are hungry.
During this time of social isolation, it’s easy to unconsciously react to situations because we’re scared, anxious, or angry. Right now it’s easier than ever to react “in the moment.” I’m betting most of us want to consciously react to situations in a kind and loving way. Instead of losing our temper or flying off the handle, let’s take a deep breath and count to 10, 20, or 100. By taking this time to breathe and count we allow ourselves to listen to our conscious mind and choose how we react.
This isn’t a one time and we’ve got this scenario. It takes practice. I do this by listening to my heart and doing what’s right for me. I also practice setting healthy boundaries within each situation.
The powerful part of living and practicing our life’s purpose is by developing a spiritual direction. Doing so allows us to connect on a deeper level. As I move from unconscious to ever-expanding consciousness in my behavior, wait to say yes, and listen to what’s fitting for me before jumping in, the more I live a purpose-filled life.
