The key to success is to focus our conscious mind on things we desire not things we fear.” ~Brian Tracy
Fear of success; we have the power to let it go!
It’s said people procrastinate because they are so afraid to succeed they keep putting off until tomorrow what could have been completed today or a month or a year ago. Why? Because we associate fear of success with irrational fears or fears not directly related to success play games with our mind.
Does this resonate with any of you? I know it does with me. I could be the gold medal winner of procrastination. I’m always afraid I’m not good enough. My blog isn’t good enough, my speech isn’t good enough, my book won’t be good enough. For goodness sake, we’re all good enough. It’s the little itty bitty voices in our head we need to quiet down and our mindset we need to change in order to move forward. But how?
In an article in Psychology Today, Ti Caine, hypnotherapist and life coach, in Sherman Oaks, California said, “The fear of success is a very unique issue that arises when you are genuinely creating change and moving forward in your life.” First of all, we all know change is constant, it happens in the future and with change there is the fear of the unknown and most people aren’t comfortable dealing with the unknown.
Caine has created a system, FutureVisioning, helping people create a detailed picture of the life they want to achieve. In order to find true success and happiness we have to release the fears we have associated with becoming successful.
Possible causes
Fear of Loneliness: Some people think when they become successful they’ll lose their friends and relationships and end up being alone. This is really an irrational idea.
Fear of Change: Again, fear of the unknown, but also, fear of leaving your comfort zone. If you have the fear of change then you may fear success too because its one of the things that can bring many changes to your life.
Fear of Hard Work to Maintain Success: When successful, you will have to work hard to maintain your success. You just might be afraid of this hard work. This is a bit true for me, honestly, because I love spending time with my family and having downtime, but when you work your business the right way, you have a support team/system to back you so you can balance work and success!
Fear of Making Enemies: Successful people may have an underlying fear of having more enemies because of success. This fear might be present because of an irrational idea learned about success such as “people will hate me if i am successful.”
Dealing with your fear
Take your power back. Look at your fears and realize which fears are irrational and which fears are not directly related to the fear of success itself. When you deal with your fears you realize you’ve had the power to change all along and it comes from our choice.
When you’ve dealt with your fears of success, you’ll be on your way to living the life you’ve always been destined to live and let the fear fly away!
Until next time,
Colleen
